15th March 2009
Kinder Scout

Since me moving to Leeds at the end of 2008, Kinder Scout was my 1st walk with a group.
We all met up in the main car park in Edale, what a lovely village this is. We turned right out of the car park and followed the road under the railway bridge. Following the road onto the Grinds Brook track. The track becomes more like a pavement. This pavement/path gives way to a normal track, which starts to climb, still following Grinds Brook.

Some of the group following the pavement near to Grinds Brook.

We continued up onto Edale Moor then to Kinder Scout summit.

There are some fascinating rock formations on Kinder Scout, The Grinds Brook Parrot being just one of them, there are others with names like Pym's Chair, the woolpacks and one which I cannot remember the name of but looks like a hogs head.

Heading up Grindsbrook Clough.

We then headed over to Kinder Downfall, this is where the river Kinder flows over the edge to form a waterfall which heads to Kinder Reservoir, but the most spectacular thing here is when the conditions are right, the water seems to fall upwards! On this day the conditions were not right for the full effect, but I could see at times the effect I was looking for.

Looking back down Grindsbrook Clough towards Edale.

From Kinder Downfall, we headed back the way we came then headed for Kinder Low, then to the famous Jacobs Ladder. I am not sure I would like to ascend this way, but even to descend via this route played havoc on my legs especially my right knee (which had just started to play up within the last year. Later to be diagnosed as a significant bucket handled tare in my cartilage).

From the bottom of Jacobs Ladder, it was more or less a gentle stroll back to Edale, and a well earned pint in The Old Nags Head pub. After a pint and a bit of a chat with my fellow walkers, I bid them farewell and headed home.
